Week 7 – Marketing

Today’s class reflection

Due date of this project is quietly sneaking up on us but your group made the most of our time in class and is moving at just the right rate to get all the boxes ticked and complete. I gave an insight and a heads up with what tasks are still remaining and our priorities. Even though your client is not cooperating to his potential, plenty can still be covered.

This week’s theme was interesting and beneficial towards our project at the same time. We were introduced to the ideas and concepts of marketing our client’s product to his fellow customers. We were also presented with how to create a storyboard, as our final presentation will be multimedia presentation telling our client a story of themes we have learned and how he could take advantage of them though our advice.
Our group spilt into three smaller groups to work on specific tasks, which increased our productivity. One group was responsible for researching marketing strategies, which would specifically aid our client, another group was in charge of creating our storyboard and the last was developing our presentation and the script that goes will it.
During our Google hangout, our group got some stimulating insight on how different marketing strategies work better and take advantage of alternate products or situations. We also noted from feedback of our storyboard take we are communicating too much content instead of telling a story. Slight alterations will have to be made to the way in which we inform our findings of the themes and research we explored to turn our presentation into more of a story.

Which of the themes we’ve been looking into so far will be of the most use towards your goal of solving the unmet need of your NGO?

Give at least 3 reasons why and tell who/what you think will play a key role towards success during the process.

When it comes to solving the unmet need for our NGO, I believe that the theme that will benefit our NGO in the best possible manner would be Crowdsourcing. This is because crowdsourcing allows for inexpensive assistance as you are able to obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community. As long as our client has a vast online community, it will be able to receive new ideas and plenty of feedback to constantly develop and improve their Drupal site. This will speed up the design process, which will consequently increase the rate of the site’s development. This theme is also an accidental advertising opportunity as a greater number of people for the other communities will get the word out and experience our client’s site and customer base. Crowdsourcing is also a great way to communicate with your current and potential customers; because you consider their opinion and feedback, your community and other communities feel more involve with our client, building a healthier relationship between them.

I do have a different take on the relevant theme when it comes to the success of our NGO’s product. I have come to the realization that we could advice our clients with the best and innovative specifications for his social networking platform and his design/development team can create the best communication and community-building site for his customers; but without a proper marketing scheme or strategy, no one will use it and take advantage of this platform. This point makes marketing a vital area to consider and invest in, to ensure the use, traffic and popularity of our client’s Drupal site.

What do you think the solution should be and why? (This does not have to be exactly the same as your group solution, but it will defend your group solution if it does match).

This question is very challenging to answer because of the difficulty we are having with communicating with your client. He promised us a full demo and his Drupal site where we could test it by discovering its strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, we were are able to do this as the demo was never given to us; because we are not sure what the current state of our client’s product is, I cannot mention in detail what I think the solution should be and why. My group and I can only advice some specifications that we believe are relevant to his product.

Our client has also failed to provide us with a design brief and or PDS so still unable to superficially see and understand what is really wanted and needed. We only have a really basic idea from the Project Communities website which is not enough.

Our group is only in the situation to provide certain advice related to the themes explored in class.

    I agree with you Nancy a scenario where we use our best knowledge is what should be doing and is probably being done, otherwise the group’s projects wouldn’t be going forward but I had the same problem, we were promised something like the demo and we never received it, it would be of great help ’cause now our suggestions and are based on a small amount of informations give to us by the NGO itself, thankfully we have classes with the subjects that help us develop this small amount, otherwise we wouldn’t have much to give back to them if we only depended on the NGO’s participation…not very nice at alll

    I understand the frustration of having limited information from a client. (I am experiencing that today with one of mine.) In order to get around this blockage, do you think it would be reasonable for you to create a scenario that uses your best knowledge, then set your recommendations in the context of the scenario? It may or may not be exactly what your client wanted, but it will enable your team to finalize your thinking. Check w/ your tutor, as this may just be another “crazy Nancy” idea.

    The other comment I wanted to share — related to my own client woes – is sometimes the client doesn’t really know what they want. So the external perspective, the questions we ask, the ideas we generate as their consultant CAN be really useful, even if we feel sometimes like we are floating around in a bubble full of jelly!
