Week8

Time goes fast, this is the final week of project community. In this 8 weeks I have learned a lot about how to be a successful designer and how to work as a group member in teamwork.

During 8 weeks study, the most important thing I have learn about using online communities and networks in innovative design is crowdfunding. Crowd funding is the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money, usually via the internet to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. In fact, crowd funding is not only for the money. In our NGo’s case, we design to crow fund more human resources, money and more reputation. With the crow funding  we can attract more people with same passion, knowledge and technology to help Solidaridad. Meanwhile, for the companies and countries who invest Solidaridad. They would have an stable support of sugarcane for award. On the other hand,
if we use public media to disseminate our crowd funding before we launch it. Not only Solidaridad, all the people who involved in this project are going to have a  favourable comment from society.

Therefore, crowd funding is not only a activity collect cash. It is also a platform for the people who have same purpose and passion to communicate.  Personally I believe crowd founding is the most important thing I have learned to improve the communities and network.

For the class in next year, I suggest to have 1 more workshop classes for each week. Because  we have to finish the design and project by teamwork. When we were working together, sometimes we got stuck, sometimes we have different ideas. Therefore,we must share our troubles and ideas. Make sure everyone can understand each other and must be involved in the teamwork. However, it will take so much time.So once a week for the meeting is not far enough. If we decide to meet after classes or in the holiday, no one can make sure that everyone can attend. For the reason, I think 1 more workshop class for each week will be much better.

Week 7

This week we had class about Marketing. Marketing is the process of  communicating the value of a product or service to customers , for the  purpose of selling the product or service. So actually there is no  company can survive without marketing.

Generally there are two approaches of marketing ——Earlier approaches and Contemporary approaches. Earlier approaches  is the earlier orientations, namely, the production orientation, the  product orientation and the selling orientation. Recent approaches in  marketing include relationship marketing with focus on the customer,  business marketing or industrial marketing with focus on an organization or institution and social marketing with focus on benefits to society. It  included Relationship marketing,Business marketing ,Societal marketing and Branding.

According to Solidaridad’s situation, personally I think contemporary  approaches is the best choice because of following reasons. First of all, Relationship marketing is the relevant point for all companies and  businessmen in contemporary society. Emphasis is building better  relationship between suppliers and customers. After that it can provide  the best possible customer service and build customer loyalty. Of course, companies can fix promblems after get more feedback and information from customers. Second, business marketing can build and keep relationships between  organizations by different forms of marketing activities, such as  promotion, advertising and communication to the customers. For  example, Solidaridad could market their project to the factories or  companies which has business or products about sugarcane.  Meanwhile, during their cooperation, Solidaridad also could increase  their publicity by having commercials or printing their logo in the  products of their cooperation companies. Last but not least, Branding plays as a key role  in the marketing programme. Branding refers to the main company  philosophy and marketing is considered to be an instrument of branding philosophy. However, it’s also means Solidaridad’s personal branding.  From now we understand that Solidaridad does not only need cash, they also need to found more human resources and technologies by  crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. So, if there are more people can  understand and agree with Solidaridad’s branding. Without question,  Solidaridad will get more help form these crowds. image

Week 5

After the study of crowd sourcing and crowd funding I realized that crowdcourcing is a relevant element for designers. Generally it would be more easier, if the designer works alone. Of course, his/her ideas would be too subjective and unilateral. However, use the crowdsourcing efficiently can collect more ideas and make them more objective. For example, a lots of famous international companies are using crowdsourcing to increase innovations in their products and management. Those companies collect great number of information and designs from people with different fields of jobs. They found out not only professional stuff are the best designers, sometimes the “outsiders” can offer other-side ideas and realize objective problems.Without question it also happened that the companies would receive more “garbage” information in their crowdsourcing. That’s the reason why it is necessary to analyze and summarize everything after you launched crowdsourcing.

In our case, we have got the answer from Nancy about the difference between crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for Solidaridad. Corwdsourcing is for the labours and crowdfunding is for the volunteers with talent or abilities such as experts. So I think the common point of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding is human resources which also is the link. The local labours need the technologies and knowledge form the experts. On the other hand, the experts need local experience and labours to make their designs come true. That’s how teams working and I also believe it fits our challenge knowledge exchanging.image

Week5

Time goes fast,this is the fifth week in this block. In last 4 weeks I think I have played as a doer in our group. Perhaps most of my group members that believe I am a silent guy, but actually I am not. In fact I really wanted to join more discussion during our team work. However, the topic is a kind of new field for me which I have never met before. That is my biggest challenge,because in China , we don’t have chance to know or learn any thing about NGO or Crowdfunding, it’s is sort of culture difference, so I did know how to start it. But something changed in last weekend, I asked my Dad to help me to analyse the purpose and the process of Solidaridad’s corwdfunding. I made my conclusion and discussed with Zakk. Finally we made our own PPT which is the first contribution to our teamwork.

During the self-study in last week, I realize that if you meet new challenges and get stuck, first don’t just focus on how to slove it. The prerequisite is you have to analyse your challenge and divide it into few parts such as what is it? What is the purpose? How to start? If I know nothing about it, who should I ask for help or discuss with? Then find out these answers step by step. This is my experience in last four weeks and I hope it would be helpful.image

Crowdsourcing and Online Social Structures

Generally I use online spaces as an individual to post on some personal picture and information which I like. But I also interact with others in my online spaces. For example, everyday I read others blogs whatever my friends or strangers. We give comment to each other or press “like”, with the passage of time, those strangers who has same topics and passions with me become one in “my friends” list. This is the way how I explore my online network.

Without question, this kind of social intercourse is the most comfortable one, because you are always talking about the topics and knowledge which you are interesting. However, it is a little bit “narrow”. Sometimes we get stuck because we met problems out of our cognition. If you can put more people who study different majors into your friend list, you would be able to get more information and advice. For sure, with the help from these kind of “human resource”can make your mind more objective and creative, because maybe some of them is the expert you need.image

week3:technology and digital issues

It’s well know that communication plays key role in contemporary society. Generally all the methods of communication base on digital and technology knowledge. For example, people use Facebook and blog to share their daily life with others. But how can they do that if they know nothing about internet?

Personally I am interesting in software and digital stuff. Generally I use “Micro message” to chat and communicate with my friends.( Because it is not allowed to use Facebook in China. ) “Micro message”is a kind of free software including blog Facebook and Skype. It also can be used in different systems of cellphones such as Apple OS and Android. So people can chat anywhere any time.Compare with Skype, customers can create a group in “Micro message” and text on it or send audio messages just like Walkie-talkie. Of course, everyone can go back and check the chat history and listen to other’s audio messages individually anytime you like. Actually it much better than all the group members talking together because if you are in a large group, it’s impossible to remember everyone’s opinion at the same time.

According to our group’s case, I believe the biggest unmet needs of our NGO is the meeting. In some places of this world, internet is not as popular as the developed countries. So solving the problem of communication should be their prerequisite.
