FINAL!

As it comes to the end of Project Community course, I had a look back on what I have learned in this period, I didn’t notice that I had learned so much thing during our research on project for our client. Most of working time was spent on networks and indeed I gained plenty of knowledge from internet. Now if I started a project, I won’t be blind and don’t know where to go because I already have so much experience. It is really hard to say what is the most important thing during network. If I had to say, I think I am inspired most from online communities. If I got stuck on something, I will go to online communities, reading some articles, seeing pictures. Then I am inspired. Even what inspired me is not important for authors but it help me out. Having a look on those successful design product, they are all designed after designers were inspired by accident moment. But not anybody can notice and be aware what is useful. So keeping opened eyes is very important during networks.

Talking about design principle for online communities. I think “make it useful” is very important. Nowadays, it is an internet booming time. There are so many online communities, some got famous, some got lost, some even never exist. Why it happens? In my opinion, it is because how practical those are. I know some online communities have attractive appearance but not so functional as users expect.

Final words on project community info! Overall, how to work in a team is most valuable what I have learned in the course. I had some insight from teamwork. First of all is the team spirit. If you don’t have team spirit you are like homeless. And all team members are your family and all of you need to help each other to get work done. Second is clear assigned task. Everybody find his good-at and work on it. Do not take responsibility what you can not do otherwise it will damage your team work.

WEEK 7

After having been working on how to apply Personal Branding strategy to Solidaridad social intranet, the final solution is coming clear. In our proposal, motivation(employees-self), filesharing and time-consuming play very important roles which determine this project is a successful one or not.

Motivation is required whatever you do. Why people go to university to seek higher diploma even though they can find a job? Because people generally think higher certificate means better jobs and higher salary. That is motivation. More simply, why we chose IDE programme? Because we just love design. This is also motivation. Nothing could be done without motivation as motivation gives you energy and faith. It is the thing to push you move forwards. Applied in our project, a possible problem is that employees do not have motivation to be involved which results the whole intranet is insignificant. We came up with some ideas to attract them. Main concept is to award “digital employee of the month” to the most active staff. Providing reasonable bonuses of course would be more effective way if it is possible.

Another important role in process is time-consuming. When I search on Solidaridad website, I found some employees have more than one position in company. Time for them is most important thing during work. So our aim is to solve time-consuming problem for this kind of employees. One practical option is to improve a little bit  to apply audio/video post on Drupal. If we can manage it, those busy employees even can post when they on subway or bus.

Since Solidaridad is a multinational organization, knowledge exchange becomes a very important part of operating. We decide use tags/category into intranet system. With it, it is much more easier for employees to search information appeared before. For example, Solidaredad is working on a project about sugarcane. Employees just need to type sugarcane on website then all posts related to sugarcane are able to be seen.

Thanks for reading.

go it alone or go with crowds

"Go it alone" or "go with crowds"? It is a simple choice question which only contain two options. But is that so easy just to choose one randomly? I do not think so. I have been exploring crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for few weeks leading to me a basic understanding on them.

Have you ever met a situation like picture above that you got stuck in choke point and you can not do anything to get rid of it. I think right the moment is the best time crowdsourcing applies. Nobody is good at in any fields for sure. But wise people save time to crowdsource task/problem to those who is expert in. It is not about avoiding, it is about make best decision and at the meanwhile, when “fool people” still obsess over problem, they can do other things they are good at. I believe this make nobody become somebody. Today, it is a sharing world especially on internet. The simplest sample of crowdsourcing is Yahoo Answer. You give out your question or task on a limited point(like a price). If an answer can solve your problem and satisfied with you points then s/he will reply it and get reward. As a designer, especially when we focus on designing the appearance, we usually meet theoretical problem like does it work in this appearance? Since we are not expert in this part then just crowdsource it. Let engineering do it. On the other side, will crowdsourcing limit our imagination or change the thought we originally have? This could be cons of crowdsourcing.

Nothing is easy when it is about money! As an entrepreneur, started-money is more important than ideas, in my own opinion. With help from crowd investors entrepreneur is getting close to their dreams. It is not only a chance for who has cases, but it is also an opportunity for those who want to change world by supporting others. Everyone of this chain will have chance to put forward their own ideas to improve product. Everyone is responsible for final product. Designer has to be modest since they seek financial support. Here are things I think borrowers have to do:

1. update agenda to investors

2. publicize specific plan to let investors know where money goes

3. take advice instead of working behind closed door

This picture present an old Chinese idiom which basically means that many hands make light work. Eventually product is made to serve people and crowcourcing and crowdfunding are two great way to understands whether product is going to be accepted by most people.

Team! Team!

Reviewing classes I went I found we worked in groups almost every class whatever the size of group. It could be two it could be twenty. I did learn much thing from every single through five weeks. But occasionally  it just didn’t work very well due to several reasons such as disagreement, absence, confusion. These factors do not influence too much when working in a temporary team but might stand out if these couldn’t be solved ASAP in a long-term team. Currently, the biggest problem of our group, in my opinion, is that all the work which are divided can’t be combined perfectly. So, it looks like each of groups works hard and well although, the team efficiency is slow. In the following weeks I think we should set a new role, cheerleader, to cheer us up.  Another problem is we were rather confused of our task. Luckily after HangOut with Mr.Van Leeuwen, we kind of figure it out and it goes right direction now.

About group size, I believe four and six are best number of team member. The size of a team impact on many things. If a team is over ten people,  it is really hard to control everything step by step. Crowdsourcinng is a good measure to solve it. Even though communication is an issue can’t be avoided especially when disagreement happens. Everybody wants to speak out, wants to insist on their own views. It will grow up with a conflict sometimes. A small group has advantage which big group doesn’t have is each of team can have enough time to express idea in turn.

Like the picture present, a team has access to success is only each of team takes responsibility and work together perfectly.

Me and my network

The first thing when I wake up is to check the Apps on my phone, like QQ(Chinese) WeChat(Chinese)RenRen(Chinese) Weibo(Chinese) Facebook. Online spaces already becomes a part of my life. When I am on bus I check it, when I am smoking I look at it, when I go to bed I skim if there anything I miss today.

As long as I join into online spaces I can not be individual whatever I want to keep it private. This is what network work. It connect people from different timezone or different countries together, intersect , interact.

My own online spaces experience is a long story. I remember it was 10 years ago when I step into online spaces which was regarded a breakthrough that time. QQ is my first experience. It was a chat tool as founded and now it becomes the biggest social software in China. It is not a simple chat tool anymore I can post pictures and invite friends to play games and so on. Although It has been ten years I still use QQ very often. WeChat and Weibo are rising recent years because these two software focus on the different aspect from QQ. WeChat is the best online spaces, I have ever known, to protect costumers’ privacy. Another factor make it outstanding is that people can talk on WeChat mostly like intercom. Weibo is the same as Twitter where I read news usually. Now I am studying in Holland there online spaces keep me with my family and friends. I post everything interesting on then they can know what is going on the other side of our planet. And I always skype with my friends over 6 hours timezone for example when I come back from university they are ready to sleep. But whatever  bad the situation is, I try as much as I can to keep in touch with my fellows.

Now I want to talk about my online spaces on abroad! Facebook is forbidden in China. I just started to use Facebook one year ago and now I am still sort of exploring it. I have to say Facebook does help me a lot. At the first few days I do not know where to go, I do not know where interesting events take place. However Facebook saved me. Now I am involved into two groups which are NEW OPEN INNOVATORS and GROUP 8 PROJECT COMM. If I meet any problem or have question I always go to groups to search or ask help. Some kind peers will post useful sites and interesting articles or video on it to help us.

At last I want to quote some words very popular in Chinese online spaces. Translated to, However fragile our relationship is, if I turn off computer and cellphone you might never reach me for the whole life.

Network is good but remember connect to people

Week 3: Technology Stewardship

I was confused as Technology Stewardship comes to the topic of this weekly blog. It never come to my mind why I use so many online tools or what I am good at because technology (especially on electronic equipment)  get involved life so quickly as to I was not aware that I use every day and it seems I can not live with them.

Currently I am learning how to use solidwork. I have experienced Google SketchUP. And I am ready to go to learn Indesign and Photoshop what ever software would be useful for designers. As I  was studying Mechanical Engineering for one year Autocad is not problem for me, I think. If you read here please tell me what kind of softwares could help me on designing after.

Unfortunately social media and websites are completely different from here than China. That is why I am still exploring Facebook world. As for Twitter or others I have no idea what they are but I’d like to try them if they interest me.
