#7 Broaden the Market

We have learned 4 themes: crowdsourcing, work team, crowdfunding, and marketing. Among the 4 themes, I think marketing is the most important and efficient thing to solve the unmet needs of the Solidaridad.

Before the project community class, I’ve never heard about Solidaridad. I did not know what is about and it took some time for me to understand what Solidaridad is and what it stands for. If people do not know the organization, all other themes can not work out well. For example, crowdsourcing needs people. Even if the organization prepared all other things for crowd funding such as blogs or social networks, there won’t be enough people participating because people don’t even know that there’s such blogs or websites waiting for their idea. For crowd funding as well, need to be well-known to the people to expect more involvement. People can see as much as they know and as much as they see, they spend more time and money. This is the reason why marketing is the key to both crowd sourcing and crowd funding.

All things are based on relationships. Seller and buyer, company and customers…all about relationships. People buy what they are familiar to. For example, when I have to make a contract with mobile phone company, I chose T-mobile among a lot of companies because that’s what I heard about the most in the Netherlands and my roommates are using it now. Like this, people choose what they heard about the most, maybe famous or well-known. That is why APPLE sells millions of products than other companies. To increase customer, the company should focus on advertising the company.

Then, what makes successful marketing? Brilliant ideas and stable company. People wants something new, brilliant, and creative. If the company market themselves with creative ways of advertising, I’m so sure that people will get interested. However, even people get interested, the companies should show their stability to make people purchase or fund. Imagine there are two companies, which is 50 years old and 5 years old. People trust the older one more because they agree that there’s some reason for the company stays stable for 50 years. The company should have experienced some failures and experiments for 50 years and this is why people choose it.

For Solidaridad, marketing it key to improve their unmet needs. Make as much people as possible to be on your side!

#6 Develop the strategies

We covered all four hats until now: crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, marketing, and work team. All four of them are important, but I think personal branding is key to get through all of them.

First of all, Solidaridad has work teams within the company. To use the team in the most efficient way is the key to success. Then, how can they use their work teams well? Using personal brands! Everyone has their place on earth. Based on their gifts, passions, and purpose, people can find their sweet spot, which is related to their personal brands. The company can group people based on their personal brands.

Knowing each person’s strength and weakness, the team can help each other to draw the best out of them. Also, if they have same purpose, they can work together even better for the one common goal! Great teamwork effects all other things: crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and marketing, and personal branding strategy is the answer!

Marketing is very important as well. Before I start the project, I’ve never heard about Solidaridad, which implies that Solidaridad is not doing great at marketing itself.

Marketing is important for not only the awareness of the company, but also the two other hats, crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. People do not invest any time or money on what they do not know. Actually, people have no interest in whatever the company do if they never heard about the company. To get people involved in what they are doing, the company first need to market them so that people can get interested on them. Marketing influences crowdsourcing and crowdfunding since both of them requires the voluntary participation of the crowds.

Then how can Solidaridad market itself? Maybe brilliant advertisements using fancy scripts, beautiful sounds, simple & clear messages with legible logos will be helpful.

Developing marketing & personal branding strategy. This is the main problem to solve for Solidaridad and for our project group.

#5 The mutual aids : Crowdfunding and crowdsourcing

Companies need crowds. Whatever the company makes, it needs to be used by crowds. In the past, crowds were considered as just ‘consumers’ or ‘users’. However, as companies trying to attract the crowds, they saw the abilities and potentials crowds have that the company needs to maximize their profit. By then, the words ‘crowdsourcing’ and ‘crowdfunding’ are created. It’s just a combination of existing words: crowd, sourcing, and funding.

Crowdsourcing, first of all, is useful to catch people’s needs and wants. Finding what people needs and trying to meet what people wants are the key to success. By involving crowds, the company can get both of them very easily. Also, the company can get lots of ideas from the crowds. Since there are so many people, the company can choose and develop the ideas they wanted from a bunch of ideas the crowds come up with. Plus, there is high possibility of new and creative ideas that the company has never thought of. Using crowdsourcing, the company can save time and money too. Since the crowdsourcing is a form of freelancing, it’s much quicker and cheaper than the expertise-based-company work. For the crowds can deliver their needs and wants to the company, so it can be a win-win process of working. However, since the origin of the source is undefined, it’s unreliable. Company must take a look over a bunch of sources to distinguish whether the source is useful or not. Since the crowds are not experts, there can be some mistakes on their ideas. Also, most of the crowds will have similar ideas which is time-wasting for the company. To use crowdsourcing efficiently, the company must find a right group of people, efficient way of collecting ideas, and set up the standard in distinguishing ideas.

Crowdfunding, on the other hand, is necessary to the company. There are 4 types of crowdfunding:  Equity, donation, lending, and reward. Crowds can fund their money, skills, talents, etc. When people fund their money, they become very logical and rational. They consider about the purpose, profitability, risks, etc before they fund their money. When the company is well-known, structured, big and historic, people are more opened and is easier to get funded. But the thing is most of the companies which badly requires crowdfunding are new-born ones. Since it has great risks to lose their money, it’s hard to find someone who supports the company.

Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding, having same root on crowds, differs in the method of approaching. To find the most ideal way to get crowds involved, the company should put on a lot of time and energy on it.

#4 Synergy Effect

Team: [NOUN] A team is a group of people who play a particular sport or game together against other similar groups of people.

There are many teams. In sports, games, in schools or even in companies people group together to work on something. Then, why people make group and when does it works most efficiently?

Usually, group members have common goal. It brings them together to work as a group. When each individual agrees with the group’s goal and starts to work on it, the teamwork stands out. However, it’s not easy to find MY place within the team.

Looking back on last 4 weeks of group work, I found out that the team works better and better as time passes and as we develop the teamwork strategy. At the first meeting, nobody knew what to do. we didn’t have a specific role within the group. So we gave each members a role. At the next meeting, all individuals at least knew what they have to do. But still, there were few people working too much and few people does not work. So we subdivided the team in groups of 2. Each small group has specific topic to work on and has to lead the whole team for assigned week. Then, the team worked better. Everyone understood the main goal and got tasks to work on. And as a result, all group members became more responsible. Thus, creating the best out of us.

Ideal condition to draw the best results from the group is depend on the subdivision of the works. And I’m so sure that regular meetings and good communications takes a big part of it too. Having certain job to do, regardless of how big or small it is, people will participate more actively in the group works.

For the coming weeks, we should work on finding the best way to divide works based on individual skills and strengths, (in other words, PERSONAL BRANDS!) It will improve the teamwork since everyone can do what they’are good at. Maybe the ideal teamwork is about balancing and educing individual abilities at utmost level in ways to contribute to the team as a whole. When the team comes out with greater results than the sum of individuals’, we call it “Synergy Effect.” That’s what I want to see from our group 9.
